Effects of Heavy Rainfall on Shallow Foundations in Bukit Timah Granite in Singapore

The increase in rainfall intensities due to climate change affect the entire globe. In particular, Singapore suffers from floods and rising of coastlines. Notably, Bukit Timah Region Singapore, are getting more intense, region houses multitudes low-rise constructions with shallow foundations. Damages ranging physical, terms motor vehicle property damages, intangible losses such as major traffic delays both private public transit were caused by floods. Few studies have been carried out foundations’ response events. When infiltrates into soil, bearing capacity soil stiffness affected matric suction. Thus, impact heavy on foundations Granite is investigated numerically using SIGMA/W. Fully coupled flow-deformation analysis unsaturated characteristics, e.g., Soil Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) permeability functions, conducted. A range intensities, durations, applied loadings produce a load–settlement curve that was compared against semi-empirical model yield reasonable results. showed suction duration, intensity, initial groundwater conditions, hydraulic properties which turn affects settlement heavily. evaluated graphical methods via curves, it found reduction heavily reduces soil. Combined residual soils transient analyses, discoveries give insight assessment subjected water infiltration.
